Being a successful reader begins with hearing and identifying sounds and patterns and connecting them to symbols. Through hands-on games, music and movement activities integrating all five of the senses, Lower School teacher Jamie Steinbock leads students as they practice and reinforce heard sounds and identify patterns in words. This is a great summer camp for the emerging reader or to help those beginning readers strengthen and solidify their phonics skills heading into the summer.

 

Mo Willems Fan Club

“Aggle flabble kabble . . . snurp?” If you recognize this quote, then you are probably a fan of (or at least familiar with) the one and only Mo Willems, award winning author of Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, Don’t Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus, and the Elephant and Piggie book series. During this week, campers will learn about the life of Mo; read, enjoy, and act out his humorous books; learn how to draw some of Mo’s well-known characters, and try their hand at writing and illustrating their own Mo Willems-esque books.

 

Brain Games

Put on your thinking cap! Clever kids, quick thinkers and fun competitions fill this week of Brain Games camp. Daily contests of games like Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, Jeopardy, and Quick Recall will keep kids on their toes and thinking for this 3rd through 5th grade camp. Campers will be challenged to show their academic prowess and wit in team events and individual tournaments.

 

Paint Like an Impressionist

Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassatt…these 19th century painters rocked the art world with their colorful paintings of French life! The famous men and women of the Impressionist era will inspire our youngest artists this summer to go outside and “paint an impression of the light and color of the moment.” We will work with watercolors, tempera, and oil pastels to recreate some of the most famous Impressionist paintings! Come join Collegiate kindergarten teacher and artist, Heidi Blackburn, for this amazing week.

 

Archery Adventures

Archery is a sport that is growing in popularity across the country. Because of the strict shooting procedures, archery is one of the safest sports. It is great for children because they learn concentration and reflection. John Beasley, Middle School English teacher and certified NASP and USA Archery Instructor will lead students through basic archery techniques and safety rules. In addition to playing numerous archer games, archers make their own PVC bows so they can continue the fun at home.

 

Food is Elementary

Food is Elementary is award-winning curriculum that has been used in over 3,000 schools in 33 states and several countries abroad reaching kids, parents, teachers and the larger community. FIE programs integrate academics with education using food as a vehicle to explore literature, culture, gardening, art, cooking, and science. Collegiate Chef Rachael Reigelman, using Collegiate’s new state of the art kitchen, will integrate academic disciplines with food, nutrition, culture, geography, and the arts. The curriculum is a research-based program modeled after the award-winning Trumansburg, New York study “Food Education in the Elementary Classroom,” the doctoral thesis of Dr. Antonia Demas.

Calling all young athletes! Running, jumping, and throwing are just the beginning of this week at camp. This exciting camp will get kids moving each day through soccer, basketball, and track and field events. Sports Stars camp staff will incorporate fun competition that will challenge tomorrow’s athletes. Competitors will enjoy spirited team games, medal ceremonies, and fun with friends! Tyler Whitchurch has over 10 years of coaching experience, most recently as a Collegiate Middle School basketball coach. He currently teaches Physical Education in Louisville, Kentucky.
