Airplane Factory

Grades 5-8
John Beasley
12:30-3:30 p.m.

The Airplane Factory is a simulation.  Students are placed into groups to form a company that will compete to design paper airplanes.  These creations are entered into a competition where the planes are judged based on specific criteria in various categories.  Students also create a marketing campaign that culminates in a commercial for the paper-airplane prototypes.   This activity requires students to compete for resources, negotiate for supplies, utilize the skills and personalities of group members, create innovative designs, manage capital and resources, and understand the basics aerodynamics of flight.  Judges will vote on the most innovative/well-designed and well-executed marketing campaign.  Success in a category, amassing the most capital, and executing the most effective marketing campaign are the yardsticks by which the companies will be measured to determine the most successful company or companies.
