World Language Curriculum
The World Language Department strives to help students to become curious citizens of the world who have the language skills necessary to confidently travel to countries around the world and to interact with the international community of Louisville. Our World Language teachers use proficiency-based curricula created in alignment with ACTFL’s proficiency guidelines. Teachers focus on teaching with comprehensible input to grow students’ communication abilities in all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, every language course seeks to increase student cultural competency. Students are required to complete through at least level III of their language of study, with at least two of those years coming during their time in the Upper School. Independent Studies offer students opportunities to delve deeper into inter-cultural and language studies.
It is the Department’s hope that students leave Louisville Collegiate School with a love and appreciation for another language and culture, and the desire to continue their language studies at university and beyond. Outside the classroom, the Department fosters opportunities for students to develop their appreciation by providing on-campus clubs, World Language Honor Societies, teaming across all divisions for events and projects, such as International Week. World Language teachers teach cultural and language classes during Louisville Collegiate School’s Summer Program and work with teachers across all divisions to promote language learning and cultural awareness.
Our students who reach a high level in language proficiency can earn the Global Seal of Biliteracy. Louisville Collegiate School is the school with the most Global Seal of Biliteracy certificates received in the state of Kentucky. Forty students were awarded certificates in 2019 for proficiency in two languages.

Global Citizenship through Curriculum
Each grade in the Lower and Middle School has chosen a UN Sustainable Goal. This goal serves as an interdisciplinary topic that is woven into the grade’s curriculum throughout the year.
